Rally may herald economic upswing
COMMODITY markets have had a pretty good run so far – gold hit a record US$1,070.40 per ounce over a week ago, while oil crossed US$80 a barrel last Wednesday.
Similar rallies were also seen in silver and the industrial metal copper.

Regions to pay $1M penalty in investment fraud (AP)
AP – Regions Bank has agreed to pay a $1 million penalty to settle a Securities and Exchange Commission complaint that it played a role in a long-term investment fraud that charged huge hidden fees and sales commissions to thousands of unwitting Latin American investors.

Lawmakers hit out at Paulson over BofA-Merrill (Reuters)
Reuters – U.S. lawmakers on Thursday slammed former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson over the government’s role in Bank of America’s merger with Merrill Lynch, saying authorities suppressed information about losses and bullied executives into going through with the deal.
