Tougher laws in effect
LAWS to give the authorities more bite when it comes to loan sharks and their accomplices came into effect yesterday, ahead of the opening of Singapore’s first casino, in a move lauded by MPs and counsellors as timely.
The changes to the Moneylenders Act also come in the wake of a rising tide of illegal moneylending activities in recent years.
Latest figures released by the police showed that ther… more
Minimise the social costs of the IRs
THE opening of Singapore’s first integrated resort (IR) – expected to be on or just before Chinese New Year – will kick off a new chapter in the history of Singapore’s tourism industry and, indeed, of its economy.
While this is worth celebrating, it is also to be hoped that everything has been done to ensure that the casino operations, especially, adhere to the regulations laid down by the Casino … more
STI jumps as traders bet on US rally
A 70-POINT rise in the December futures contract on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a 1.7 per cent rise in Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index and a firm opening Europe-wide yesterday led traders here to bet heavily on Wall Street opening the week with a bang. The subsequent buying targeted mainly banks and propelled the Straits Times Index up 56.62 points to 2,783.85 in moderate volume of 1.85 billion … more
Market weakens in line with soft Europe opening
GIVEN that the Straits Times Index bounced sharply off its intraday low on Monday in anticipation of the US market rising that day, it came as no surprise that the response here was muted after Wall Street duly posted a Monday rise.
The ST Index, which from low to high on Monday gained about 34 points, drifted within a narrow band yesterday, but a soft opening for Europe brought the sellers out an… more
Mixed close on hopes of US rise
THE local market marched to the tune of Hong Kong yesterday and – to a greater extent – expectations of how Wall Street would perform when it opened on Monday. And going by the weak opening – clearly in response to Friday’s US slide – followed by an afternoon rebound, players were betting on the US market recovering its poise on Monday.
Added evidence for expecting this came by way of a 50-point r… more
STI snaps five-day winning streak
THE Singapore market lurked in the twilight zone before dropping slightly yesterday, owing to a weak opening for European equities and US stock futures turning negative.

Resilience despite volatility fears
THE equity market in Singapore and around the region remained volatile and wary as the forces of hope and fear (or greed and fear, as some might prefer) continued to battle it out in the psyche of the investor.
Weakness in Hong Kong, where tech shares were sold down, and a lacklustre opening in Shanghai translated into a somewhat bearish session here in Singapore, with the Straits Times giving up … more
Buying in hopes of Wall St rebound
INVESTORS yesterday banked on Wall Street reopening with a bang after its closure on Monday for a public holiday and so pushed Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index up 2.1 per cent and the Straits Times Index up 16.96 points to 2,660.91.
It was the STI’s fourth consecutive rise, during which it has gained 90 points or 3.5 per cent. Also adding to confidence to buy was a firm opening for Europe and a 95-poin… more
Shanghai takes shine off STI’s bright start
THE local bourse was raring to go yesterday morning, but its bright start to the week crumbled rapidly under enormous selling pressure in Shanghai, which plunged deeply into the red.
After opening at a high of 2,667.82 points, the Straits Times Index (STI) quickly lost steam, sinking into negative territory within half an hour of trading. It never made it back to the black all day.

This Week’s Market Outlook
The risk pullback we were looking for this past week proved exceptionally short-lived, with an opening dip at the start of the week giving way to yet another rebound by the end of the week. Stock markets stabilized after an early scare out of China and the S&P 500 managed…
