Stocks edge higher after mixed economic data
The stock market eked out a gain as investors took glum economic news in stride. The small gains still left stocks with a loss for the week but the Dow and S&P 500 logged their best month since November.

Weekly Technical Update: Week of the Yen
While the Greenback was the strong performer of last week, the Japanese yen took that title for this week. Although we did see a general gain in the USD, it was no match for the JPY which was boosted from this week’s risk aversion.
Portfolios up 0.4% on average
STOCKS barely changed last week, with our portfolios edging up 0.4 per cent on average. The median gain was 0.2 per cent.
The lowest forward PE portfolio is the biggest gainer, advancing by 1.7 per cent. Two stocks contributed the bulk of the gain: China Fishery and Hong Leong Asia. The former popped 19.2 per cent while, the latter added 12.2 per cent.

Wholesale inventories, sales post strong gains
Inventories held by wholesalers posted an unexpectedly strong gain in November while sales shot up by the largest amount in 10 months.

A U.S. report Thursday on claims for unemployment aid signaled that layoffs are easing and that the economy could be on the verge of posting the first monthly gain in jobs in two years.

U.S. businesses unexpectedly increased their inventories in October. The small gain raised hopes that businesses will begin restocking their shelves, helping support the recovery.

STI rises 14 points in sombre session
